As with formal classroom training and other forms of face-to-face training, remote learning requires clarity and needs to be engaging to be truly effective. So, how can you make the remote learning experience more effective?
Keep it simple
Keeping directions clear and simple is paramount when it comes to remote learning. Not physically being in the same location as the learners can be a challenge for trainers, as it can be harder to gauge the comprehension of the course material.
Another consideration is ensuring that the training is delivered on an easy to use and widely available platform such as Skype or Zoom and that you avoid using too many different apps or platforms.
Keep it engaging
Whether you are delivering training face-to-face or remotely online, the content should always be engaging. Plain text documents or a very classroom based approach can become boring and if learners aren’t engaged their learning outcomes may not be the best they could be.
Think about the types of content you can use as part of your training session and take people on a journey rather than bombard them with information. Encourage participation and questions so you can tailor the session to their experiences and environments.
Keep it short
Ideally, training sessions should be a maximum of 90 minutes and long modules should be broken down into bitesize chunks. This can help with concentration and improve retention of the information in the training session.
Building on knowledge over time rather than cramming it all into one or two sessions can be an effective way to ensure learners get the most from the training. In addition to keeping the sessions short, you should also consider keeping group sizes to a maximum of 8-10 people to ensure you can interact with each person.
